Try it with your chipset first, only way to really know. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Hello guys,

I just tried my first attempt in flashing my stock ms28 drive and it did not go well :(
I used jungle flasher and connected the drive to my mobo's SATA and was able to recognize the drive and used sammy unlock to switch it to vendor mode. I was able to obtain and save the original firmware after clicking on the READ. However, when I tried to flash the drive, my PC hanged and had to switch both PC and xbox 360 off after waiting for quite sometime. I was able to repeat the same process but again my PC hanged when I tried to flash the drive and had to shut down my pc and xbox 360 once more. Now my XBOX is stuck on flashing green LED (like during vendor mode) and jungle flasher either don't recognize it anymore or mistakes it for a hitachi drive. When I try sammy again it fails, when I try to flash it is returnins 0X80 status, turning off and ON the XBOX doesn't change the status and the LED just keeps flashing. Just fyi that I installed and ran port032.exe and that's why jungle flasher picked up the ms28 drive in the first stage. Now the drive is no longer recognized even if port32.exe is running. Any help is appreciated.
By the way I also tried iprep and booted via USB drive, the status show flashing 0x80 and 0x00(?) and turning off/on the xbox 360 will just switch 0x7F(? might be different) and 0x80/0x00.

Hi,

Have you tried dosflash16?
You will need to make your firmware using JF call it CFW.bin.
Use iprep or bootflash to make your usb bootable.
Make a folder on the usb named dos.
In the dos folder add dosflash.exe,dosflash.typ,firmware tool & your custom FW.
Boot to usb.
At the c:/ prompt turn on the 360.
Type cd dos enter.
type dosflash enter.
You should see your drive in the list.
pick the drive number, then w to write.
When asked for the file name type CFW.bin.

Tnx Loungefly for your suggestion. I think I already did something similar by running dos flash and tried running write directly but failed as well. But I will try again this weekend with exactly what you suggested by creating a dos folder.
will post the result here.

Hi Loungefly, I just tried what you suggested and the result is unfortunately not good :(. when I ran dosflash and turned on my drive it is being recognized but getting "MKT vendor intro failed" when I chose yes the status is again a tpggle between 0x00 and 0x80, when I turn off the XBOX it becomes 0x7F and back to 0x00 and 0x80 after turning xbox on again. I aborted and chose my drive directly and chose W, it returned an error "unknown flash chip!" and returns to prompt. All this time please nkte that XBOX's center LED is continiously flashing. I think the previous unfinished flash by jungle flasher when my pc hanged has messed up the firmware and I don't how to force write it back :(. any other sugestions pls?

When you send the MTK vendor intro you have to power cycle the drive(turn off/on).
To do this pull the lead with the small white plastic block from the back of the dvd drive & replug it back in within a few seconds.
Practice doing this with the 360 off so you get the hang of it.
If that doesn't work try not sending the intro & then writing to the drive.

thanks again for the suggestion. just did that several time and all it it does is change from status 0x00/0x80 (cable plugged) to 0x7F (unplugged) and back to toggling 0x00/0x80 status. when I don't send intro and to to write directly it returns with error unknown flash chip and returns to prompt :(
By the way is there a way to manually eject and open the drive's tray? I read somewhere if it left half way open it will force it to vendor mode.
Update: I just tried the half open tray to force the drive to go to vendor but still NG<sigh>.
