Thread: Thermal paste or new fan?

Apply some thermal paste first. And since your in there if you haven't already change out the xclamps to.

Apart from being a right sod to put back on what is the point of changing the x-clamps if I have not got a RROD on the box?

Well it was just a suggestion. You don't have to but if your going to take off the xclamps might as well replace them.

The fan is roaring cause the thermal paste is bad on the CPU and trying to overheat. It should quit once you get good heat transfer with new paste. Do the paste on both GPU and CPU. X-clamp fix optional.

Thought so cheers, I have heard that x-clamp fix can be a little hit and miss and also the Elites were given a bit of assistance to prevent RROD with a bit of epoxy but even that is hit and miss too

no need to do the x-clamp fix, just apply new thermal paste and put the x clamps back on.

I had the thermal paste delivered today and before I even opened up the xbox I took a few minutes to examine the compound which even though was advertised and sold as Silver compound was in actual fact grey silicone which IMO has the worse thermal charts around especially for an xbox. So I am back to square one for compound replacement so I am going to ask another question on this thread rather then open a new one.

Does any know of a good UK based seller for silver or diamond compound with 1 requirement it has to fairly cheap

I bought here and done a couple of boxes with it, worked a treat.
one box was like yours, very loud fan, but after this was applied it was whisper quite.
no need to change the fan, just redo with good paste...

get some arctic MX-2, it's as good as or maybe even better than AS5, they swear by it over at CVX forum. You can get it on ebay, it's like £4 and you get 8 gram, just ordered some myself
