New to iXtreme.net? Get started here!

Welcome to iXtreme.net. This, and more importantly the FORUM RULES, should be your first stop to learning the ropes of flashing custom firmware (CFW) to your Xbox 360 DVD drive. Also included is information for ripping your retail game disks (XGD2 and XGD3) and burning backups.

You WILL have to open the Xbox 360 to take the DVD drive out for flashing. It can NOT be done otherwise. So be aware, you will be voiding any warranty still existing for you console.

ATTENTION: A point of order before starting, the risks involved in running CFW while connected to Xbox LIVE (XBL) are your own. This website and it's owners hold no liability for any consequences incurred for such activities (up to and including being banned from XBL and losing the privileges of your XBL membership). Up to this point the risk is minimal if ALL precautions are taken, but iXtreme.net has no control of how Microsoft(M$) protects it's assets. In other words, you're on your own. That being said....

There are several tools and programs needed in preparation:

    A) Tools for connecting the Xbox 360 DVD drive to your PC or laptop and for ripping and burning backups

    1) X360USB Pro V1 or V2 (connects the drive via USB/SATA converter). Drivers and firmware links are HERE
    2) CK3, CK3i or CK3 Mini (with PSU for powering the drive; CK3 is built into the X360USB Pro V2)
    3) CK3 Probe V3 (used for extracting drive key from Phat Xbox 360 Liteon model drives; there are tuts on the Web for constructing your own)
    4) A Phat BenQ or Liteon model XBox 360 DVD drive with 0800 firmware for ripping retail game disks (X360USB Pro V2 allows the use of any OEM Xbox 360 DVD drive to rip retail disks without the need for 0800 ripping FW)
    5) Liteon IHAS series DVD+R DL burner for making XGD3 backups(HERE is a list of those and a few other compatible drives that have been tested)
    6) Sony Optiarc AD-5280S-CB "Plus" or "Robot" version for burning XGD3 backups without the need for the BurnerMax firmware.

Note: Some on-board chipsets are compatible with straight SATA connection to your PC motherboard for Xbox 360 DVD drive flashing. This can only be determined by testing it yourself.
A VIA 6421a card (for PC or laptop) may also to used to create a SATA connection. Both of these methods do have some amount of success but may also come with undesirable effects such as freezing during the process of flashing the Xbox 360 DVD drive.
Another plausible method for powering the drive during flashing is using the Xbox 360 power. However, this is not recommended as it may cause a flag for a future ban from XBL. The risk is your own.

    B) Programs and downloads for flashing, ripping and burning (click on the name for a link for download instructions)

    1) Jungle Flasher and Tutorial
    2) Latest iXtreme LT Plus Firmware Pack (this includes stock firmware (OFW) and 0800 firmware for ripping)
    3) ABGX360 (HERE's an alternate download link) and Tutorial (Thank you Slick)
    4) Xbox Backup Creator and Tutorial
    5) iXtreme Burner Max Firmware , flashing Tutorial and Burning Guide (Thank you R3D)
    6) IMGBurn software for burning (a must for burning XGD3 backups, recommended for most burning applications) and IMGBurn Functions Guide and Settings Guide
    7) Kprobe 2 for analyzing XGD3 burns (tutorial and benchmarks are in R3D's Burning Guide)
(Nero DiscSpeed and DVDInfoPro can also be used)
    8) BurnerMAX Payload Tool v0.15 works with most MTK chipset based DVD burners (Liteon etc). No need to flash BurnerMax firmware. Tutorial.

    C) For information on Slim model DVD drive PCB hacks, Jtag and RGH please refer to the appropriate sections of forum topics

    1) Kamikaze knife mod for unlocking Slim Winbond chip
    2) Unlocking Slim MXIC chip without the need of a sputnik switch/probe.
    3) Sputnik Switch Tutorial
    4) Xecuter LTU2 PCB and FW for ALL Slim models is now available (RGH required).

NOTE: A word of advice before posting questions in the forum, use the search function. Many questions have been hashed and rehashed, which is what prompted this thread. Read through some of the tutorials, you may find the information you need there. A small amount of research on your own will go a long way to earning the respect of senior members. We're here to help, not to spoon-feed the lazy.

When asking for help, post information about your console (dashboard, DVD drive, CFW version) and any related logs (abgx, ImgBurn, Kprobe2, JungleFlasher). It will make diagnosing your issue much easier if we can see what you're seeing. Don't be shy about thanking anyone for their help. There is a "Thanks" button near the bottom left of each persons post. Try it now! Also, at the bottom righthand corner of the text area of each post is a "Like" button. You may click any post as "Liked" if so inclined.

And please don't be impatient. Those in-the-know aren't always available. We do have lives outside the forum, believe it or not.

*Please do NOT submit your flashing questions here. Post new threads in the proper forum section.

Now get your flash on and squeeze off a few headshots for me!

Please submit any additions that might make this more informative for the noobs. I don't have much experience with Slims, Jtag or RGH. So maybe some links to appropriate Tuts or threads of any significance would be most appreciated. Something to list under section "C", only if needed.

Done mate, and if you need to edit a title in future, then all you need to do is double click to the right of the title and it will let you edit it

I was going to write one of these. I'm glad someone else did it as I really couldn't be bothered haha! Good thread

EDIT: Might be useful if you also add in the Sputnik switch way for Slims?
Recommended KProbe2 Summary: (If they are higher than these then it's your choice to risk a potential ban)

PI MAX = 100 or less, PI Average = 5 or less
PIF MAX = 4 or less, PIF Average = 0.20 or less
