no need for probe??

I have a 9504 drive that was updated to 0272 and dashboard 13599.

I got the device key and followed the tutorial to send the intro. Unfortunately it failed multiple times and wouldn't successfully intro the drive.

So my next step was to hit the slim unlock button and that put the drive into vendor mode. After that I still couldn't intro the drive so I loaded the firmware and went ahead and tried to write to the drive.

This is where I get confused! It wrote the firmware successfully. Everywhere I've researched said that I had to purchase the Sputnik probe. But I never cut the trace or probed.

Is this common? Has anyone heard of this? Please don't bash.

your slim drive is no longer writable. the 13599 and 13146 updates locked the SPI on the board so you cannot flash them as-is. You need to figure out what chip you have and then proceed :How to tell if Liteon DG-16D4S is MXIC or Winbond SPI - Team Xecuter

if you have an mxic, you need either an unlocked pcb, sputnik360 or sputnik360 probe. the two latter ones requires soldering, trace cuts & repairs.

if you have a winbond you need an unlocked pcb or to perform the kamizkaze which requires you to drill into the chip as well as to have a few other pieces of hardware.

I burned one of my backups and it loaded right up.

I'm sort of upset I had to wait that long for the Sputnik probe to be released and delivered

Backup worked without a hitch. I'm upset I spent $20 for the probe without even using it.

so you are saying you have a slim, updated to latest dash, that didnt require any extra hardware to write to? you might want to go buy a lotto ticket man, cause you are actually the only person I have ever heard of that had that work....
