With Ixtreme 1.6 is it possible to play backups from other regions such as japan, pal etc?

No, unfortunatly the console stays lock to its original region. Luckily a lot of games are available as region free copies though.

To expand on that answer:
Region is locked to some chip on the board, which right now cannot be modded. Give it time, though.
